Ann Coulter is clearly a racist. As you can see in this excerpt from a debate between Coulter and Al Franken, she advocates racial profiling in airports and racializes Arabs, saying that “terrorists” (by which Coulter means Arabs and Muslims) have the same hair color, eye color, and skin color. “What about Timothy McVeigh?,” you may ask. “What about George Bush and Dick Cheney?”
Coulter’s racism against Arabs and hatred for Islam goes far beyond her arguments in the clip. Most of us remember her statement following the September 11, 2001 attacks:
On these points, Coulter is either an ignoramus or a liar (generally, of course, she is both). It is simply not true that all terrorists are Muslims. We could spend hours discussing terrorism committed by people other than Muslims, but I want to mention just one – one that goes to the heart of Ann’s inability to think objectively (because she has the fascist’s sense of nationalism). In Nicaragua, the United States assembled a murderous plot that left tens of thousands of civilians dead. The World Court condemned the United States for its criminal behavior and ordered the Reagan administration to stop violating international law and pay reparations. Thus under international law the United States was adjudicated a terrorist state.
When confronted about her argument that Muslims shouldn’t be allowed to travel by plane with the question of how would she propose they travel, Coulter answered, “They could use flying carpets.” She has uttered much worse than this. In reference to Iran she said, “I think our motto should be, post-9-11: raghead talks tough, raghead faces consequences.” Similarly, she wrote, “I believe our motto should be after 9/11: Jihad monkey talks tough; jihad monkey takes the consequences. Sorry, I realize that's offensive. How about ‘camel jockey’? What? Now what’d I say? Boy, you tent merchants sure are touchy. Grow up, would you?” These comments are not examples of political incorrectness; they are examples of extreme racism.
Just last month, Coulter falsely conflated al Qaeda with Iraq and blamed Iraqis for their own suffering, saying,
In 1983, the Reagan administration forged an even closer relationship with Saddam, sending Donald Rumsfeld to Iraq to meet personally with Saddam. The US provided Iraq with intelligence, armaments, and supplies to use against the Iranians (in a terrible and protracted war that left millions dead), as well as dissidents in Iraq. When Iraq was driven from Kuwait, President George Bush I intentionally left Saddam in power, and even permitted Saddam to use force to put down insurrections against his rule.
So in point of fact, the Iraqi people did not let Saddam come to power. Saddam was installed as dictator by the United States and was maintained as dictator for all those years.
Why do I bother discussing Ann Coulter? First, her rhetoric gives me opportunities to tell the truth about things by correct her false statements. Second, and why correcting the record is important, millions of Americans believe Coulter is a clear thinker who tells it like it is. They believe the things she says are true. If only a handful of them stumble upon my web site, then they will be exposed to the actual facts. If they are rational people – and I don’t assume every conservative is hopelessly irrational even if their countermovement is – then they may learn something and correct the record among their friends.
With conservatives pushing Armageddon, every little bit helps.
Coulter’s racism against Arabs and hatred for Islam goes far beyond her arguments in the clip. Most of us remember her statement following the September 11, 2001 attacks:
Airports scrupulously apply the same laughably ineffective airport harassment to Suzy Chapstick as to Muslim hijackers. It is preposterous to assume every passenger is a potential crazed homicidal maniac. We know who the homicidal maniacs are. They are the ones cheering and dancing right now. We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war.But do most people know that she wrote, “Not all Muslims may be terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims - at least all terrorists capable of assembling a murderous plot against America that leaves 7,000 people dead in under two hours”? Or when she wrote, “If only we could get Muslims to boycott all airlines, we could dispense with airport security altogether”?
On these points, Coulter is either an ignoramus or a liar (generally, of course, she is both). It is simply not true that all terrorists are Muslims. We could spend hours discussing terrorism committed by people other than Muslims, but I want to mention just one – one that goes to the heart of Ann’s inability to think objectively (because she has the fascist’s sense of nationalism). Just last month, Coulter falsely conflated al Qaeda with Iraq and blamed Iraqis for their own suffering, saying,
We’ve killed about 20,000 of them, of terrorists, of militants, of Al Qaeda members, and they’ve gotten a little over 3,000 of ours. That is where the war is being fought, in Iraq, that is where we are fighting Al Qaeda. Sorry we have to use your country, Iraqis, but you let Saddam come to power, ha-ha, and we are going to instill democracy in your country.Again, ignorance or deception? First, Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with al Qaeda. They were enemies. Second, it was a CIA-organized coup that brought the Ba’ath Party to power in Iraq. The CIA had been trying for years to accomplish this, and in fact, Saddam was the trigger man in one of the Agency’s failed attempts to assassinate the reigning Iraq’s leader. Saddam came out of exile in Egypt after the successful ’63 coup and was installed as head of Iraq’s secret service. The CIA handed Saddam a list of the names of communists and other progressive leaders in Iraq and Saddam systematically murdered them, assuming total control over Iraqi society.
